Five students of the Kalashnikov Academy became finalists of the National Technological Olympiad, the largest Olympiad for schoolchildren in Russia. These are Andrei Bely, Mikhail Murzaev and Demid Babikov (Neuro. Artificial Intelligence), Artem Mikhailov (Space), and Maksim Taranenko (Robotics). The results of the final Artificial Intelligence stage were presented in Moscow.


	The Artificial Intelligence became the most popular and numerous in the 2022/23 season. The competitions were held at the Higher School of Economics and the Sberbank Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. The finals took five days and included a subject tour (individual work on tasks in mathematics and computer science) and a profile tour (team work on an AI task).


	“This olympiad lasted for unforgettable seven days: hundred kids from different parts of Russia and other countries and I experienced a variety of emotions. We all had to go through technical challenges that eventually brought us together. The finals brought together some motivated, purposeful and smart guys whom it was very interesting to communicate with. The leaderboard was constantly changing since everyone wanted to get to the top. At the award ceremony, I learned that all my efforts were justified as I became the prize winner. I was awarded valuable technical prizes and a diploma. I am sure that this experience will help me get enrolled in the best university this summer," says Andrei Bely, the winner of the olympiad.


	This is the largest technological olympiad in Russia: its prize winners enjoy significantly simplified admission to the country's leading universities.

"It is necessary to get back to firearms training in educational institutions: we all already understand that being able to defend oneself and the country with firearms in one's hands is a vital necessity in the modern world," says Alan Lushnikov, President of Kalashnikov Concern JSC, while speaking live on SOLOVYEVLIVE channel.


	According to him, the country approached a situation in 2021 in which the degradation of weapons production in Russia began. The reasons for this are as follows:


	• extremely inconvenient regulation of everything related to firearms;


	• almost total degradation of the mass shooting infrastructure;


	• failing prestige of possession of weapons, crimes committed with weapons, and loss of hunting skills;


	• risk of loss of a number of competencies on the part of the small arms manufacturers.


	“The ability to use small arms began to be perceived as part of a militarized Soviet person. Some youth subcultures completely rejected not only the possession of weapons, but the defense of the motherland. Later, mass media began to instill phobias of gun ownership in the Russian society. The agenda about the high hazard of weapons is constantly exaggerated. That guns kill. The emphasis was deliberately shifted from a person using the weapons to the small arms themselves," says Alan Lushnikov.


	According to the president of the Concern, the point of view that the introduction of firearms training is extremely dangerous, also for schoolchildren, is being imposed on the society. That it is required to introduce additional prohibitions and restrictions. But here's the question: why hasn't there been a single school shooting in the entire history of the USSR? Worldwide experience in combating mass shootings suggests the following: half of all weapons used in crimes is obtained on the black market, or stolen. The tightening of law regarding the legal circulation of weapons leads to an increase in illegal circulation of weapons. The solution is the training in order to develop a responsible approach to the possession of weapons, the return to firearms training in educational institutions, and the restoration of shooting range infrastructure.


	“As for the safety of our children in schools, it is necessary to approach the prevention of this social phenomenon only in a comprehensive manner.” Namely:


	First thing, use the technical means to protect schools more intensively.


	Second thing, it is necessary to conduct an experiment on introduction of school inspectors or school marshals, the way it is done abroad. These people need to be given additional rights, including the screening, use of restrictions, and participation in the prevention of antisocial behavior.


	Third thing, ensure proper operation of the existing electronic systems for prevention of violations – first of all, the Bezopasny Gorod (Safe City). It should be noted that the Kazan shooter walked through the city without hiding his weapons. Nobody stopped him.


	Fourth thing, when designing buildings and structures for educational institutions, it is necessary to provide for them with premises or equipment aimed specifically at ensuring proper safety of students as a mandatory part of their standard design.


	Fifth thing, it is necessary to impose restrictions on dissemination of information about attacks on educational organizations since this contributes to false glorification of criminals.

Igor Mitrofanov and Sergei Korshun, retired colonels and veterans of the Alpha and Sigma special forces units (the latter created under the Federal Border Service of the Russian Federation) became the heroes of the new story in the special AK: No Fiction project.


	 They graduated from the Golitsyn Higher Border Military and Political School of the KGB and completed a brilliant military path in the ranks of the domestic special forces.


	 Igor Mitrofanov guarded the state border, then served in the legendary Alpha group, fought in Afghanistan, and then actively participated in the creation of the Sigma border special unit as ordered by the head of the Federal Border Service of Russia and led it for almost three years.


	 Sergei Korshun got into Alpha group immediately upon graduation, and later, he became a member of the Sigma group.


	 The Kalashnikov assault rifle has been the key firearms of the special forces throughout this challenging and dangerous path.


	 Igor Mitrofanov recalls how Mikhail Kalashnikov came to Golitsyn School and presented a green rifle to it. By the way, much attention was paid to firearms training at school: Sergei Korshun says a border guard must run fast and hit the eye of a squirrel. The same requirements were imposed in the special forces: accurately hit all types of targets with different types of small arms from any distance.


	 The heroes will tell about their military missions to the North Caucasus during which they fought against the alcohol mafia, returned 800 meters of the Russian territory illegally appropriated by the Georgians. The special forces unit detained 32 violators of the state border in just one night. In a word, the veterans of the Alpha and Sigma groups will remember a lot.


	 The video explains why it was important to have 7.62 mm and 5.45 mm Kalashnikov assault rifles at the border and also what role the warming up of the Kalashnikov assault rifle barrels played.


	 However, the main thing that the special forces officers emphasize is that the Kalashnikov assault rifle is an all-purpose weapon for any special forces unit: it never fails in extreme conditions where military men have to perform their tasks. According to Igor Mitrofanov, AK is the best rifle, "the brand for the entire world."


	 Special forces veterans also tested modern small arms developed by the Kalashnikov Concern: a 5.45 mm Kalashnikov AK-12 assault rifle, a 9 mm Kalashnikov PPK-20 submachine gun, a 9 mm PLK Lebedev pistol, and a 7.62 mm Chukavin sniper rifle.

The TsNIITOCHMASH-operated state testing station conducted more than 2,750 tests of various types in 2022. This includes 1,520 certification tests of individual and group armor protection, bank security equipment, as well as civilian weapons and ammunition for them, and over 1,250 evaluation tests of individual and group armor protection, and bank security equipment. This is almost 60% more than what was done in 2021.


	Such a significant increase is first of all due to the intensification of testing various means of individual and group armor protection in connection with the special military operation.


	The state testing station was established at TsNIITOCHMASH in 1960. Initially, the state testing station of the Russian Federation was the leader in all types of state testing of sports and hunting weapons and ammunition for them. In 2009, the station expanded its scope of accreditation to test the means of technical protection, armored clothing, armor protection, special vehicles, bank security equipment, armored glass, etc.


	Over the past years, the station has carried out about 15 thousand certification tests of approximately 1 million weapons, over 7 thousand batches of ammunition, and almost 6 thousand items of armor protection.

The Kalashnikov Concern announced the start of TG2S and TR9S rifle sales in March. Updated versions of rifles chambered in 366TK (TG2S) and 345TKM (TR9S) have a completely smooth-bore barrel to ensure compliance with the Russian Weapons Law. They can be bought subject to a license for smooth-bore weapons with a magazine (after two years of experience).

Kalashnikov to start selling TG2S and TR9S rifles in March

Following the results of sea trials last year, the Abalon seismoacoustic bottom complex developed by Kalashnikov Concern JSC will undergo final retrofitting and will be ready for launching into serial production by the end of 2023. Igor Khodakovsky, Head of Experimental Electronics Production at Kalashnikov Concern, talked about this at the meeting of the Open Research and Technical Council on Import Substitution in Exploration held at the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia.


	According to him, the Abalon station is a unique domestic product made entirely of Russian components. "The station was developed from scratch using the Concern's own component base. It provides a much more accurate geological view and, accordingly, more precise determination of hydrocarbon deposit borders and works at depths of up to two kilometers," says Mr Khodakovsky.


	Mr Khodakovsky explained that the vast majority of Russian seismic survey companies work only with cable equipment, while the share of cableless systems owned by domestic companies is small. Some companies employ rented nodal equipment for certain projects (which–due to natural constraints–are difficult to implement by cable), but this possibility is also becoming increasingly less available due to sanctions. Under current sanctions, Magseis Fairfield, INOVA, InApril and other equipment is completely unavailable in Russia, even for rent.


	Abalon is characterized by its own full-cycle production, integrated circuits and discrete semiconductors of the company's own design, precision isotope frequency references as the basis for onboard time scale drivers, the use of multicrystal micro-modules of the latest generation of the company's own design and production.


	The following works will be carried out within the final pre-production phase:

	<li>modernization of the bottom station hydrophones;</li>
	<li>development of the launch-and-recovery system design;</li>
	<li>finalization of the software user's graphical interface.</li>
</ul>



	"These works will result in the convenience of operation in the field, which minimizes vessel days for offshore prospecting surveys, the capability for fine-tuning to a given depth and, ultimately, the convenience when operating the complex software package which consists in using familiar forms and interface logic," emphasizes Mr Khodakovsky.

Nobel Brothers Shipyard LLC plans to promote its products, a line of civilian ships that the shipyard can build for export, in friendly countries. These include trawlers, crab boats, dry cargo vessels, tugs, and other technical fleet vessels. Dmitry Kolobkov, Deputy General Director of the shipyard, talked about the company's export plans at a meeting with the management of the Kalashnikov Rybinsk River Transport School.


	As an option for its foreign customers, the company and the school are willing to arrange for training for the crews of vessels planned to be built for exports. The advanced training program with the issuance of a state-backed document will be developed for a specific vessel design and take account of the specifics of the equipment on it.

Development of new projects in the field of defense and security of Russia and Belarus and the implementation of the existing programs became the main topics of the two-day meeting of the Security and Defense Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State in Izhevsk.


	For their first visit to the capital of Udmurtia, the Parliamentary Assembly members visited the manufacturing site of Kalashnikov Concern, the largest Russian maker of small arms in Russia. Oleg Belokonev, Chairman of the Security and Defense Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly, Andrey Krasov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, and other representatives of the Commission held their first-ever field meeting in this region and learned about the modern combat weapon models and the automatic rifle and sniper rifle assembly technology at Kalashnikov site first thing.


	"Under the conditions of continuous escalation of tension on the borders of the allied states, the issues of rear and border security and stronger interaction between our two countries become ever so important. In this regard, the interest in Kalashnikov products is quite understandable: the Concern offers the widest range of weapons – from small arms to unmanned aerial vehicle systems. Twenty pistols manufactured by the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant are on display at the Pistoletnaya Istoriya exhibition which opened in the Kalashnikov Small Arms Museum and Exhibition Complex in Izhevsk. Izhevsk Mechanical Plant designers Vladimir Yarygin and Dmitry Lebedev spoke with the visitors at the first tour about the weapons and the history of their development.


	Vladimir Yarygin, Izhevsk Mechanical Plant long-service employee and honorary gunsmith of Russia, shared his recollections about the history of his 6P35 and its development in civilian models and gave his personal tour of several stands with sports and combat weapons developed at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant.


	Dmitry Lebedev, Lead Design Engineer at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, told the guests about the development of the Lebedev pistols (PL) line, which has been underway since 2014. There are already five modifications in the PL range: three models of combat pistols –&nbsp;compact PLK, modular MPL and MPL-1, sporting IZh-182 and less-lethal PLK-T, which are being set up for their mass production at the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant.


	"I would like to thank the hosts for the Pistoletnaya Istoriya exhibit. In many respects, it is about the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant weapons: during all 80 years of its operation, it has specialized in serial production of pistols, and it is the largest Russian manufacturer of small arms for infighting today. It is important that Izhevsk residents know about it and are no less proud than of Kalashnikov assault rifle. This exhibition is not only about the past, it looks into the future: it shows modern Lebedev pistols, which are being set up for production, and I am sure our designers will not stop at this," says Oleg Sapozhnikov, Commercial Director of the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, at the exhibition opening.


	Among 60 pistols at the Pistoletnaya Istoriya exhibition, Izhevsk Mechanical Plant presented PLK, MPL, Yarygin pistol, sporting IZh-1, MTs-3 Rekord, IZh-23, IZh-KhR-30, IZh-KhR-31, IZh-50 models, signaling and starting pistols manufactured in different periods of the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant development.


	In addition to the plant products, the exhibition also offers foreign models of handguns, including Smith &amp; Wesson revolvers, Mauser and Browning pistols, and others. The exhibition is open until mid-May 2023 at 19 Borodina St. in Izhevsk.
