In the late 1930s, a contest was announced for replacing the then relatively new 1933 TT pistol, as the troops at that time were very critical of it. Among other things, armored forces demanded that the new pistol should be suitable for shooting through firing ports in armored vehicles, which is why it had to have a thin barrel. As part of the contest, designer Nikolayev from Izhevsk developed a self-loading pistol for 7.62TT cartridges with a magazine for 8 cartridges, but it did not reach the finals, and the contest itself was terminated when the war started.
