From the very beginning, Mikhail Kalashnikov wanted his weapon to be easy to produce. He achieved this goal in 1959, when production of modernized Kalashnikov assault rifle called AKM began.
New stamped receiver reduced overall weight of the firearm and allowed to considerably increase production. In the late 60s, just one Izhevsk factory produced over half a million AKs every year.
